Student Safety & Support
January 29, 2026
The Montana School Counselor Association (MSCA) Board of Directors is issuing this communication to its members to address concerns related to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) presence within Montana communities. One of MSCA’s foundational beliefs is that we stand for the equity, safety and security of all students.
The board acknowledges the current situation and stands in solidarity with all members as they navigate these developments within their professional roles.
This may impact each of us differently, both professionally and personally. We encourage you to reach out for support as needed and to prioritize your own well-being.
What School Counselors Can Do
-
Consult with school administration to understand existing procedures related to student safety, confidentiality, and family communication.
-
Advocate for clarity by asking that procedures be clearly defined and communicated, especially if questions or concerns arise within the school community.
-
Rely on ASCA’s ethical guidance, as well as school policies and state/federal law, when navigating complex situations involving student welfare.
-
Maintain a focus on student support, ensuring schools remain welcoming, inclusive spaces for all students.
Seek professional consultation as needed and utilize available resources to guide decision-making and practice.
